A new report from the National Registry shows that foreign nationals in Iceland now number over 55,000 individuals.

Specifically, there are now 55,181 foreign nationals living in Iceland. Part of these numbers are comprised of the 202 foreign nationals who became registered at the National Registry from December 1st 2021 through February 1st of this year. During this same period, Icelandic nationals increased their numbers by 370 individuals.

A more detailed report (.xlsx file) show that in terms of numbers, the largest decrease in foreign nationals was among the Polish, 89 of whom left Iceland during this time period. Poles comprise the largest ethnic minority in Iceland, numbering some 21,102 individuals, or 5.6% of the total population and just over 38% of all foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, the largest increase in numbers since last December was found amongst Venezuelans (87), Romanians (54) and Afghans (29).

The National Registry emphasises that these numbers are based on the people who are registered as having a legal residence in Iceland. As such, those living in Iceland with a legal residence registered elsewhere are not included in the data.
